Online Dating
Online dating is also referred to as internet dating and has grown exponentially in popularity in the past decade. Online dating sites are actually systems employed for the purpose of allowing couples, groups, or individuals to contact one another and communicate using the internet. The objective is to develop a relationship that is usually personal, romantic, and/or sexual. Non-moderated internet matchmaking using cell phones and/or computers is the primary function of an online dating service.
Online dating sites typically require perspective members to provide their personal information before they are allowed to search the site’s database for individuals with similar criteria and preferences. Criteria and preferences include such factors as age, gender, and location. Additionally, members are allowed to download photos of themselves for others to see when searching the site’s database.
Many online dating sites provide their members with additional services such as:
- Message boards
- Online chatrooms
- VoIP (or telephone) chats
- Webcasts
Although many of these sites do offer free registration, they may also offer higher level services which require the member to pay a monthly fee. However, other online dating sites will generate their revenue from advertising.
Many dating websites tend to be very diverse in that their members are looking for different types of relationships and hail from a wide range of backgrounds. Other dating sites tend to be considerably more specific and strict, as well as being based on different aspects such as:
- Interests
- Location
- Relationship preferences
