Dating for Single Parents

Jan 14

Dating for single parents needs to be fun and fulfilling, and getting the most out of each date is of paramount importance.  Being a single parent is very demanding, and it is important to ensure that the dating process does not add to the stress that you already have.

Generally speaking, there are two options available for individuals who are raising children when it comes to dating.  You can either choose to remove the kids from the equation entirely and only date when you can get a sitter – or when they are staying with someone else such as your former partner, your parents, or their friends – or you can involve the children in your dating life.  If you decide to choose the second option, planning is the key to ensuring that everyone has a great time.

If you include your kids in the date, plan the elements of the date around their needs.  Try to plan a perfect day that includes treats that the kids can look forward to, and plenty of entertainment, but which doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.  Going to see show or a film that the kids pick is an affordable treat, and following that up with a meal at a family friendly restaurant can round out the date.  You want your kids to develop positive associations with having a new love in your life, so make sure the first outings are filled with smiles and laughs.  If the person you are dating has kids of their own, bringing both families together on the date can help to form the foundation for a long-term relationship.

Even if you choose to include your kids in your dating life, in order for any relationship to grow you will need to ensure that you have some time alone with the person you are dating.  One possibility is to make one out of every three dates just the two of you.
